THE PARCHED PLANET
NEWSCIENTIST 25 FEBRUARY 2006
‘It takes 20,000 liters of water to grow 1 kilo of coffee, 11,000 liters of water to make a quarter-pounder hamburger and 5000 liters of water to make 1 kilo of cheese. No wonder the Earth is running dry’. This impressively introductory bang makes all of us consider what human do affect to our Mother Nature. Estimating water on Earth, no one but knows that 95% of water stays on oceans and 4.95% of it is underground water while the other 0.05% is the daily water we are using in rivers, lakes and streams. At the smallest rate of water stay on Earth but it was the one serve to the giant number of people around the world. No one can believe that water we are using can be a limited resource, neither do I.
As the rising number using water everyday is currently happening in US and Western-Europe countries as the water is less on Earth and the drought follows to other continents as more. As a saying goes, ‘Famine followed in the wake of the drought’. The mass global starvation has just past to us for 40 years, quite short to the next one. Many governments think about this danger but still have none action. My stand in this solution is that we need to reserve water we using so far today. However, it just an idea that everyone knows but rarely do.
Scientist tries his best to a good solution. Some think about recycled water while some think about conversing ocean water to water we are using. I know that this way can be very helpful. However, does it carry out with the annual giant budget spend on. Problem need solution and human are facing with his response. As a saying goes, ‘we reap as we sow’.
